An Apostille is a certification designed to simplify the legalization and authentication of public documents for international recognition among countries that are part of the 1961 Hague Convention Treaty. If a document is needed in a country that is not a member of the Hague Convention, it is termed an Authentication Certificate.
So what does this mean for you? Say, you need a transcript from a university to be used in another country. You would need an Apostille rather than just a notarized document. Similarly, if you need to use your Birth Certificate in another country, you cannot do a notarized copy, but you would need an Apostille.
